Ashtanga (Sanskrit for “eight-limbed”) is originally named after the eight limbs of yoga as mentioned in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Modern ashtanga yoga was refined and popularized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois during the 20th century in Mysore, India and is focused on a series of Asana (physical postures) performed in sequence and linked with the breath (Vinyasa).
